10 Tips for Success in College:
Your First Year
College should be an exciting and
exhilarating time in your life. This will be a time for you to
develop into the person you are supposed to become. It will be a
time for intellectual development as well as a time to explore your
vocational (career) interests.
Beginning college for the first time can be an intimidating
experience, however this is normal. You are about to embark upon the
unknown. Remember, though, just by your acceptance into the college
of your choice says you have the ability to succeed. Even though you
have the ability, you ultimately have the responsibility to do the
work. So if you are beginning your first year or will be someday,
below are a few tips to start you off right.
Tip #1 – Motivate Yourself
Motivation to do well comes from within. Mom can’t motivate you. Dad
can’t motivate you nor can your friends. If you cannot motivate
yourself, college may not be for you at this time or you will fail
unnecessarily.
Tip #2 – Be Responsible
You, now, must be responsible for your own success. No one will wake
you up in the morning or remind you to go to class. No one will tell
you to keep up with your assignments. You are a college student
which means no one is responsible for you except you.
Tip #3 – Seek Help
If you find that you are having difficulties doing your best, seek
help from those who may be of assistance – advisors, counselors or
your instructors. Anyone whom you believe can help you, find them.
Tip #4 – Go to Class
You can’t learn if you’re not in class. Every class you do not
attend is like throwing away money. So don’t waste your time and/or
money if you don’t want to go to class.
Tip #5 – Do the Work
When you go to class do the work to the best of your ability. You
have the ability, remember? Meet the expectations of the class and
your instructor. For every hour of class plan to work (study) at
least two hours outside of class.
Tip #6 – Work Efficiently
Develop study techniques that work. If possible, take a course on
college study skills or work with an academic coach. Get a tutor if
needed. What worked in high school might not necessarily work in
college. Work smarter, not harder.
Tip #7 – Solve Own Problems
Part of being an adult is solving your own problems. Of course get
help when you need it but don’t call home for every little thing.
Learn how to solve problems yourself. (Parents - ground your
helicopters and don’t hover over your students.)
Tip #8 – Find a Balance
All work and no play is unbalanced. College is a time to also have
fun. Find activities that will allow you a break from the books.
Extracurricular activities are also opportunities to explore
vocational interests or to build skills such as leadership,
organizational and planning skills.
Tip #9 – Get Exercise
Utilize the facilities on campus to begin your own workout plan or
participate in intramural sports. Exercise your body to balance the
exercise your mind is getting from the books.
Tip # 10 – Socialize
You may find lifelong friends while in college. This is not a time
to become an academic hermit and miss out on meeting people from
different places. Remember balance is important so don’t socialize
to the point where you are neglecting other areas – in particular
your studies.
Follow these tips and you will begin your college experience on a
good note. Develop good habits now and you will carry them with you
after college. Have fun!
